New Years Eve CDMX Guide ✨🍾✨

Hey all! Happy new year... I cannot believe we have made it to this time of the year so quickly! It's been quite the year of highs, some lows, and so many new beginnings. From COVID induced prohibitions, to my Oakland apartment catching fire and sparking the real move to CDMX, to starting this community with 10 friends (and growing it to 1500+!!), to starting a podcast, to building a crypto/web3 community, and now launching a historically iconic NFT project ("se compraaaaaaaa..."), this is officially the fastest pace year of my life with the fastest growing community in all of Mexico. Wild. Thank you.

Now as promised, I'll leave you with a list of parties and some tips in the case of unfortunate run-ins with the police.

Law Enforcement Run Ins

Bribes can get you out of a situation, but there are other methods that can get you out for significantly less money and headache.

Tips to remember:

Try to make the situation as short as possible. Do not engage or go willingly with police if you can avoid it.
Avoid looking like a target- either by being extremely inebriated or looking lost
Take photos/video of the car and/or officer if you can
Ask for the officer's badge number and why they are stopping you
Don't ever hand over your phone or passport
They are required to ID themselves and explain the reason for the stop
They can only search you if they have a warrant and/or a clear indication that you might be/are breaking the law
If they threaten to take you jail for not paying them, ask to call your consulate
You can legally carry up to 5 g of marijuana on your person [source]
You CANNOT drink or carry open containers on the streets
Not wearing a mask is not a jailable offense, but you can get stopped for it

Unfortunately, officers are not paid well in Mexico so the incentive to intimidate unsuspecting foreigners for bribes is quite high. Be aware, be alert, and stay safe!
